What’s (always) in my summer bag?

What is in my summer bag

While the Festive Season has come to an end, summer is still here and there are certain things that I always have in my summer bag. Over the holidays, I’ve also finetuned the list a bit, to ensure that I am always prepared. So, herewith the list of things that I always keep in my summer bag, as well as a few add-ons for special occasions like going to the beach.

SPF50 – A Summer Bag Essential

First and foremost, SPF is my BFF and there is no doubt about it. As a child, I never realised the importance of it, but now, it’s my number one item in my summer (and winter) bag. I recently started using Neutrogena’s Hydroboost Hydrating Fluid and I absolutely love it. This fragrance-free product is silky soft on the skin and gives your skin the perfect hydrated radiance you’re after. Plus, it protects your skin from UVA, UVB and long-UVA and comes with pro-vitamin B5 and 2% Niacinamide. It’s also easily accessible, with stores like Dis-Chem stocking it. I’ve yet to try their tinted SPF, but as we enter the new year and I need to replenish my SPF for my summer bag, I might give the tinted version a go as it always comes in handy on days when I travel to events and meetings for work. Still, the SPF50 will always be my first choice.

I recently got back into my skin gym routine (from LifeLab) and as the process can be described as a slow peel, it leaves my skin rather vulnerable. Hence, SPF50 is truly something I can’t go without and I’ve grown used to using it at least twice a day (or more on warmer days when I spend more time in the sun).

Lip Protector

SPF for my lips is something I only recently started adding to my summer bag, but it’s something I won’t be removing from it any time soon. I’ve been jumping between essence’s Pout Protector (SPF20) and Catrice’s Holiday Lips Caring Lip Balm (SPF25).

Cream and Powder Palette

Catrice’s Blush Affair Cream and Powder Palette came in very handy this summer, keeping my summer bag light and fulfilling a dual purpose. I used this product to add blush to my summer cheeks, but also to add colour to my lips. In fact, I sometimes even used it as eyeshadow when I didn’t feel like going all out with a full face of makeup. It’s the perfect must-have for your summer bag, allowing you to freshen up in a jiffy. The cream works particularly well on your lips and you can also use it as base for the powder on your cheeks, ensuring that you keep your blush for longer.

Luscious Lips

If there are two makeup items I can truly not go without, it’s waterproof mascara and some kind of colour for my lips. I love keeping essence’s relatively new Juicy Bomb glossy lip balm in my summer bag, as it hydrates, plumps and colours my lips beautifully. It gives you that natural shimmer you’re after on a hot summer’s day.

A Hat That Fits My Summer Bag

Of course, a hat is a must for summer and if I am not wearing it, I do like to keep a hat at hand (especially in summer). Travel-friendly, packable or crushable hats will always be my go-to. Sunhats’ options are endless, with loads of elegant options to choose from.

Triangle Scarf

I recently also started adding a triangle scarf to my summer bag. It’s an easy accessory that can be used to add a bit of glam to an otherwise dull outfit, or to create a better hair do after a day out on the beach. Whether you wear it as a bandana, a headband, a belt, an actual scarf or a touch of colour to your summer bag’s handle, there are various ways in which a triangle scarf can add a dash of confidence to your look.

Baby Powder

A small bottle of baby powder in my summer bag has saved my life on numerous occasions. With kids wanting to play in the sand wherever they go, or me wanting to take an impromptu walk on the beach over the summer holidays, it’s a must-have. It helps get the sand off your feet in no time.

Healthy Summer Bag Snack

If I am not the one who gets hungry, the kids definitely do. So, I always have a healthy snack in my summer bag, whether it’s an apple, banana, raisins or nuts.

The Inevitable

Of course, my phone, a charger, a power bank and my purse go without saying.

Whether I am heading to the beach or to an important meeting, these are mainly the things I keep in my summer bag at all times. What is in your summer bag?
