Strauss & Co’s March Timed Online Wine auction, which kicks off on 1 March 2024, revolves around the theme of the 2014 Vintage, focusing on the ageing potential of modern-era South African wines. Ultimately, the essence of great wine lies in its ability to evolve into a more pleasurable and intriguing drink over time. The question on everyone’s lips is: How well do contemporary South African wines fare as they mature?
Winemag.co.za publishes its highly awaited 10-Year-Old Wine Report annually. It is a comprehensive analysis of how modern-era wines develop with age. The judging panel, led by Christian Eades (Editor of Winemag.co.za) and James Pietersen of Wine Cellar, Cape Town scrutinised 82 wines in this year’s tasting, a decade post-vintage. Vinpro has noted that the 2014 Vintage presented challenges due to excessive and ill-timed rainfall, posing difficulties for producers.
“The 2014s recently tasted for the latest Winemag.co.za 10year review, proves unequivocally that our finest wines mature beautifully. I was particularly impressed with the top-rated Bordeaux Red blends. The Sauvignon Blanc/Semillon Whites are simply stunning, with years of evolution still ahead,” says James Pietersen, CEO of Wine Cellar.
