The Toyota Hilux has been around since 1969 and since then, it’s grown in quite the trusty steed. One of its biggest attributes is probably its versatility – from its reliability and strength on the farm, to its ripped look as it glides through city streets. But, it’s in the way that the Toyota Hilux Legend 55 commands respect on the roads that I found my fit.

In celebration of its legacy, Toyota South Africa has released a number of special-edition Hilux models over the years, with the latest version being the Hilux Legend 55. Like each of its predecessors, this Legend also marks an important milestone in the vehicle’s nearly 60-year-long journey.

During my recent visit to Cape Town, the Hilux Legend 55 Double Cab was my companion for four days. Together, we explored the exciting changes at Vergenoegd Löw, reviewed the Sabi Sabi Collection’s The Claremont, checked out The Taj Cape Town’s newly refurbished rooms, dined at beyond Restaurant at Buitenverwachting, as well as Yatai and Café Sofi in town, drove up Signal Hill, had coffee at La Motte and spent time at Babylonstoren’s Soetmelksvlei. When the petrol attendant described me and my companion as Beauty and the Beast – a typical comment from a local Capetonian and an apt comparison no less – I couldn’t help but consider the fact that while the Legend 55 might appear impressively robust on the exterior, it’s certainly got a feminine side too…

The cabin features refined elements like chrome-banded scuff plates and heavy-duty rubber floormats and while the seats seem sporty, they’re stylishly embroidered, proving that much thought has gone into the details of the drive. A puddle light logo projection – exclusive to the Toyota Hilux Legend 55 Double Cab – adds a welcome surprise, as does its shark fin antenna, resulting in a polished look for modern appeal. In addition, the Legend 55’s unique badging, a protective front bash plate and secure lockable roller shutter bring balance between efficacy and elegance. And that’s just the looks! Its outdoorsy, productive personality is displayed in the form of a rubberised load box, branded styling bar, detachable tow bar and roof ornament.

No road trip is proper without Paperkites and podcasts in the background, which is why I was ecstatic about the Legend 55’s seamless connectivity. The 8-inch touchscreen multimedia system was easy to navigate, equipped with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Of course, the 9-speaker JBL audio set-up assisted in creating the perfect soundtrack as we drove straight through to Vergenoegd Löw from Cape Town International Airport. In fact, it picked up where we left off every time, transforming moments into memories as we passed vineyards, meandered the tree-lined streets of Claremont and searched for parking in Sea Point. FYI: All new Toyota vehicles are fitted with a device with various features, including access to in-car Wi-Fi capabilities with a complimentary 25Gb.

Powered by Toyota’s 2.8-litre GD-6 turbodiesel engine and paired with a refined 6-speed automatic transmission, it’s a match made in heaven if you’re looking for a serious road trip companion, especially if you’re planning to explore off the beaten paths. The Legend 55 produces 150 kW and 500 Nm of torque, providing a confident balance of efficiency and strength.

The Hilux Legend 55 will be available until 2026 and comes in two body styles: the versatile Xtra Cab or the family-ready Double Cab. Both these options hold the hallmarks of the previous editions, but with a few thoughtful updates considering drivers’ needs when it comes to design and convenience.

All Toyota Hilux Legend 55 models come standard with a 0-services/90 000 km service plan and a 3-year/100 000 km warranty. You can also purchase service, maintenance or warranty extensions via Toyota’s dealer network of 220 outlets.
