It’s been eleven years since tashas opened its Nelson Mandela Square location and it’s recently undergone a bit of a refresh. SUITCASE & CHARDONNAY was invited to join in on the joyous occasion of its reopening, complemented by a menu inspired by the relaxed sophistication of Marbella (reinterpreted, of course, through a unique, South African lens).

Layered in a subtle European elegance, the reimagined tashas Nelson Mandela Square builds on the café’s signature warmth – a result of Africa meets Marbella. It blends Sandton’s urban energy with the ease and sociability of Mediterranean living, giving diners a glimpse of Marbella’s coastal soul. Located in southern Spain’s Costa del Sol, Marbella is known as a luxurious Mediterranean hotspot; a sundrenched destination with designer boutiques and vibrant nightlife.

tashas Nelson Mandela Square, Inspired by Indoor-Outdoor Living

Founder and CEO of Tashas Group, Natasha Sideris says: “Marbella has an effortless social rhythm. We were inspired by its layered indoor-outdoor lifestyle, sun-washed materials and understated glamour, and translated that spirit into something brighter, warmer and more textural for Nelson Mandela Square.”

What To Expect at the Reimagined Restaurant

Diners at this newly refurbed restaurant can expect earthy base tones paired with beautiful, soft greens that bring freshness to the space. The project serves as continued proof of Tashas Group’s commitment to craftsmanship, with the iconic ceiling installation by South African glassblower, Mike Hyam remaining as centrepiece. In addition to this, artisanal metalwork and bespoke furniture were created by Nadia Cerva of The Iron Banister, and custom cane installations were produced by Cane World. In fact, cane is one of the main design characteristics throughout the space – celebrated for its heritage, longevity and timelessness.

Whilst they’ve done away with the former Flamingo Lounge, creating a more open and inviting space where diners can linger for longer, the outdoor terrace has been reimagined as a sun-drenched courtyard reminiscent of a Spanish patio. Elements like rattan details and bespoke wall lights aid in creating a relaxed atmosphere where you can enjoy Joburg’s climate while escaping its pace.

“We love drawing inspiration from places around the world, but every restaurant must feel right for its location,” Natasha says. “This was a natural fit – seamlessly blending Mediterranean energy with Sandton’s fashion-forward pulse.”

What’s on the Menu at tashas Nelson Mandela Square?

When it comes to the menu, tashas Nelson Mandela Square will continue to feature classic dishes the brand has become famous for. Some returning classics include their Pork Fillet with Apple & Pistachio Pesto, Cornflake-Crumbed Chicken Schnitzel and the signature T-Bone Steak with Creamy Truffle & Wild Mushroom Sauce.

There are, of course, some Marbella-inspired dishes that have been added to the menu to complement the reopening. In Marbella, they have a vibrant dining culture and meals are social and generous. Naturally, you can expect tapas-style starters like Beef Carpaccio with Truffle and Mustard Aioli, Parmesan & Rocket, and Pinchos De Pollo that encourage sharing. For those lingering lunches, opt for their Prawn & Chicken Paella or La Hamburger topped with Chorizo Crumb. And, don’t you dare neglect dessert here! The baked cheesecake is a must.

Feeling familiar, yet new, tashas Nelson Mandela Square offers guests a welcoming dining experience where global inspiration meets the soul of Africa.
