Growing up with Bridget Jones, the latest sequel, Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy, was a bucket full of sentiment, nostalgia and relatable chuckles and comparable tears. In the film, which launches in cinemas on 14 February 2025, the now mother of 50 is still mourning her husband after he passed away four years ago, while also continuing her journey of self-discovery – Bridget Jones style.
Hilarious and heartbreaking all at the same time, this film had me laughing out loud and crying almost uncontrollably. Writer, Helen Fielding hit the nail on the head with so many realistic and relatable scenes, evoking raw emotion and possibly – for some – even a different way of thinking.
Of course, Renée Zellweger brings her exceptional talent to the screen, proving that even amidst the chaos and challenges in life, we need to live! In the film, her character seesaws from one emotion to the next and then back again – grieving her late husband, but finding joy in her children, who are the only two things she’s got left of her dear Mr. Darcy.
The film revolves around Bridget rediscovering her love for life through different relationships, whether it’s with friends or a 29-year-old Bio Chemist called Roxster (played by Leo Woodall). In fact, Roxster puts the journey of rediscovery in motion, bringing excitement, adventure and all the things we’ve come to know dear old Bridget for, back into her being.
Further to the fun, there is also a more serious element to the film. Through Bridget and her two children, the narrative sheds light on loss within a family and how losing a father affects the children. A teacher – Mr. Wallaker – makes for a fine protagonist, guiding more than one heart to a place of acceptance.
If you’re a Bridget Jones fan, one thing I can tell you is that apart from the many emotions the film evokes, it boasts some truly classic Bridget Jones wardrobe essentials too. While she is not necessarily the first person most people would run to for fashion advice, you’d be surprised at the gems she’s collected over the years. So, before you watch the film, here is some Mad About the Boy style inspiration that will help you tap into your inner Bridget. Go ahead and dive back into those 90s and 2000s fashion trends with some proper casual chic style inspiration from the one and only, Bridget Jones.
Go Green
One of the feature pieces in both the trailer and the film, is Bridget’s popping green dress. It’s a fresh colour to have in your wardrobe for those autumn days where you are just not feeling the red, orange and beige hues of the season. Find similar dresses here:
- Embroidered dress from Old Khaki.
- An open back knitwear dress from Superbalist.

A Youthful Addition
Look youthful and fresh in a short, flowy, floral dress similar to Bridget’s date night choice. Plus, add a classic denim jacket for those cooler evenings.

This White Floral Print Babydoll Dress is from Truworths:

Or, try one of the below blue floral dresses.
- Dress Flor from Superbalist.
- Floral Print Sweetheart Neck Shirred Back Mini Dress from The Perfect Touch.

No wardrobe is complete without a classic denim jacket and Bridget Jones knows that all too well. In the film, she wears many versions, but this one seems to work well for a date night:

The Classic Cardigan
The classic cardigan is a staple fashion item you should have in your wardrobe all year round. Especially now, as we’re nearing the change of season. No autumn is a true autumn without a classic black cardigan and Bridget Jones proves that it can be worn all through winter too.
- Rhinestone-button cardigan from Superbalist.
- Viscose Blend Cardigan from Woolworths.

In Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy, Bridget is seen wearing her blush pink cardigan often too – one of those classic Bridget Jones cosy knits. Whether it’s with a pair of bright orange pants, over a cocktail dress or under a jacket, it’s a definite go-to for the self-discovering mom and the perfect add-on for Bridget Jones-inspired fall outfits.

- The Classic Viscose Blend Cardigan is from Woolworths.
- Or, opt for their long-sleeved Knit Cardigan.

One thing I love about Bridget is that she’s all for comfort (except for when she wears dresses with zips). When it comes to shoes, they’re never too high and when she’s home, slippers are a definite go-to right up until the point where she really needs to leave home. In fact, just before she leaves for a dinner date with friends, she is seen wearing slipper shoes similar to the below as she greets her old friend, Daniel Cleaver. These The Dune Wayfarer slippers are certainly on my Bridget Jones-inspired wardrobe list for winter.

- The below sheepskin slippers are locally made and perfect for colder months.
- Or, try these UGG Young Ladies Tasman form Trenton.

Of course, a classic black pair of boots will never go out of style. Bridget Jones’ are both classic and comfortable. They’re not too high, but work for casual, as well as more formal looks, adding to those classic Bridget Jones fashion moments.
- Today1 leather boot from Superbalist.
- Peppertree chelsea boot from Superbalist.
- Women’s Steve Madden Black Achiever Boots form bash.

Zellweger’s character also wore lots of stunning jackets in the film, Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy. One that stood out was a quilted jacket with pocket detail. Clearly, quilted jackets are still on trend, so the below options would be a good start as you plan your winter wardrobe. First up, the Burberry diamond-quilted hooded jacket:

Or, opt for one of these:
- Puffer coat anna from Superbalist.
- Jules Parka form Poetry Stores.
- Womens TS Funnel Ecru Puffer Jacket from bash.

And finally, straight leg jeans work well for moms who like to be adventurous with their kids. Whether Bridget Jones goes tree climbing or hiking, she means business in her straight leg jeans.

For me, these high rise straight leg jeans are a good fit.

Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy are in cinemas from 14 February 2025 and it’s a definite must-watch. If not for the storyline, then for Bridget Jones fashion for everyday women.
