Style Your Week: How to Plan a Week’s Worth of Outfits

Style your week

By Renate Engelbrecht

Monday, Aug 26

As the weekend started winding down and the reality of Monday morning loomed, I realised that one of the reasons I feel anxious on a Sunday evening, is often the overwhelming feeling of the week ahead. So, I figured, one way to feel less anxious is to do something that I enjoy, while simultaneously preparing for the week. One simple, yet powerful way to do this, is by planning your outfits for the entire week on Sunday night. And, being someone who enjoys experimenting with colours, textures and styles, to style and plan my outfits for the week is the ultimate wind-down activity for a Sunday night!

Taking a little time on Sunday to curate your looks can set a positive tone for the entire week. In fact, it can even make you feel excited about the week and what you will be wearing. Not only does this ‘tactic’ eliminate the stress of last-minute wardrobe decisions, but it also helps you feel more organised, focused and in control come Monday morning. So, here’s how you can make this Sunday night ritual a game-changer for your week:

Check Your Diary Before You Style Your Outfits

Before diving into your closet, take a few minutes to review your schedule for the week. Do you have important meetings, casual workdays or special events happening? Understanding what’s on your agenda for the week will help you plan outfits that are both appropriate and stylish. This way, you’re not scrambling to find something last minute for that unexpected meeting or dinner date. For instance, this week I had to plan outfits for:

  • A slow editing and writing day at home, an outing with my son to the play therapist (keeping in mind that I have a sugar appointment thereafter, so it would need to be stylish, yet comfortable).
  • A market-vibe style for the preview of Kamers/Makers at Steyn City on Wednesday
  • Bottega’s official launch event at OR Tambo International Airport (followed by a late-afternoon flight to Cape Town).
  • Cape Town meetings with Hello Lifestyle’s Cape Town team.
  • The possibility of a formal event and finally,
  • A product launch with Okapi at Anthonij Rupert Wine Farm.

Woah! You see why planning these things on a Sunday evening is probably best? This week will be anything from casual chic to five-star formal.

Consult the Weatherman

Now, the trouble comes in with the weather, since Pretoria is currently a summer haven, while Cape Town is still stuck in winter. Nothing can throw off a carefully planned outfit like unexpected weather! So, make sure to check the forecast for the week ahead. This will help you choose layers, footwear and accessories that keep you comfortable, come rain or shine. Being prepared for the elements means you’ll look great and feel confident no matter what the weather brings.

Choose Adaptable Pieces

When planning your outfits, focus on versatile pieces that can be mixed and matched throughout the week. Especially when you know you will be travelling. A well-fitted blazer, a classic pair of jeans or a neutral skirt can be dressed up or down depending on the day’s activities. This not only saves you time, but also ensures you get the most out of your wardrobe.

Don’t Forget a Pop of Personality

While it’s important to plan practical outfits, don’t forget to add a touch of your personal style into each look. Whether it’s a statement necklace, a bold scarf or a pair of vibrant shoes, adding a pop of personality to your outfits can boost your confidence and make your week more fun and fashionable. It’s one of those things to look forward to come Monday!

Flatlay, Baby!

Once you’ve selected your outfits, lay them out for each day, including accessories, shoes and even undergarments. This ensures that everything is ready to go and you won’t waste time searching for that missing earring or the right belt on a busy morning. You can even take photos of each outfit to keep on your phone for easy reference throughout the week.

Plan and Style for Flexibility

Life is unpredictable and your wardrobe should be too. Make sure to have a backup outfit or two in mind, just in case your plans change or you don’t feel like wearing what you’ve originally picked out. Having a few go-to looks in reserve can save you from any last-minute wardrobe predicaments.
