Scriptures for uncertain times

By Renate Engelbrecht

Here are some scriptures I’ve come across for when I feel scared, alone, uncertain, tired or hopeless. I hope it could mean something to you. Let me know if it does!

During these uncertain times, there is only one Person we could really turn to and that is God. Who else knows our hearts better than He does? Who listens better than He does?

When you’re scared, read:

Deut 1:21, 29

“Look! He has placed it in front of you. Go and occupy it as the Lord, the God of your ancestors, has promised you. Don’t be afraid! Don’t be discouraged!”

“But I said to you, ‘Don’t be afraid! The Lord your God is going before you. He will fight for you just as you saw Him do in Egypt. And you saw how the Lord your God cared for you again and again here in the wilderness, just as a father cares for his child.’”

Deut 20:1,3

“When you go out to fight your enemies and you face horses and chariots and an army greater than your own, do not be afraid. The Lord your God, who brought you safely out of Egypt, is with you!”

“He will say, ‘Listen to me, all you men of Israel! Do not be afraid as you go out to fight today! DO not lose heart or panic! For the Lord your God is going with you! He will fight for you against your enemies, and He will give you victory!’”

Ps 27:1

“The Lord is my light and my salvation – so why should I be afraid? The Lord protects me from danger – so why should I tremble?”

Ps 56:3,4

“But when I am afraid, I put my trust in You. O God, praise your word. I trust in God, wo why should I be afraid? What can mere mortals do to me?”

Isa 12:2

“See, God has come to save me. I will trust in Him and not be afraid. The Lord God is my strength and my song. He has become my salvation.”

Isa 44:8

“Do not tremble; do not be afraid. Have I not proclaimed from ages past what my purposes are for you? You are my witnesses – is there any other God? No! There is no other Rock – not one!”

Mark 5:36

“But Jesus ignored their comments and said to Jairus, ‘Don’t be afraid. Just trust me.”

John 14:27

“I am leaving you with a gift – peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give isn’t like the peace the world gives. So don’t be troubled or afraid.”

Heb 13:6

“That is why we can say with confidence, ‘The Lord is my helpter, so I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?”

When you are uncertain, read:

Hab 2:4

“Look at the proud! They trust in themselves, and their lives are crooked; but the righteous will live by their faith.”

Matt 6:30

“And if God cares so wonderfully for flowers that are here today and gone tomorrow, won’t He more surely care for you? You have so little faith!”

Matt 8:26

“And Jesus answered, ‘Why are you afraid? You have so little faith!’ Then He stood up and rebuked the wind and waves, and suddenly all was calm.”

Matt 9:22, 29

“Jesus turned around and said to her, ‘Daughter, be encouraged! Your faith has made you well.’ And the woman was healed at that moment.”

Matt 17:20

“’You didn’t have enough faith,’ Jesus told them. ‘I assure you, even if you had faith as small as a mustard seed you could say to this mountain, Move from here to there, and it would move. Nothing would be impossible.’”

Matt 21:21

“Then Jesus told them, ‘I assure you, if you have faith and don’t doubt, you can do things like this and much more. You can even say to this mountain, May God lift you up and throw you into the sea, and it will happen. If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer.”

Acts 3:16

“The name of Jesus has healed this man – and you know how lame he was before. Faith in Jesus’ name has caused this healing before your very eyes.”

Rom 4:20

“Abraham never wavered in believing God’s promise. In fact, his faith grew stronger, and in this he brought glory to God.”

When you are tired, read:

Isa 40:29

“He gives power to those who are tired and worn out; He offers strength to the weak.”

When you feel hopeless, read:

Ps 42:5

“Why am I discouraged? Why so sad? I will put my hope in God! I will praise Him again – my Saviour and my God!”

Ps 62:5

“I wait quietly before God, for my hope is in Him.”

Ps 119:74

“May all who fear You find in me a cause for joy, for I have put my hope in Your word.”

Prov 23:18

“For surely you have a future ahead of you; your hope will not be disappointed.”

Lam 3:21

“Yet I still dare to hope when I remember this: The unfailing love of the Lord never ends! By His mercies we have been kept from complete destruction.”

Rom 15:13

“So I pray that God, who gives you hope, will keep you happy and full of peace as you believe in Him. May you overflow with hope through the power of the Holy Spirit.”

Heb 10:23

“Without wavering, let us hold tightly to the hope we say we have, for God can be trusted to keep His promise. Think of ways to encourage one another to outbursts of love and good deeds.”

Heb 11:1

“What is faith? It is the confident assurance that what we hope for is going to happen. It is the evidence of things we cannot yet see.”
