A Gift Guide for Slow Living

Gift Guide Slow Living Christmas Suitcase & Chardonnay

By Renate Engelbrecht

Monday, Dec 11

This year, all I want for Christmas is the gift of slow living. I want to wake up without an alarm clock, lounge around the house (or on the beach), read books, play boardgames, pick fresh fruit on the farm, go for long beach and berg walks, indulge in some of South Africa’s best wines, go road tripping and more. If you know of someone else who’s keen on a Christmas holiday like this, perhaps these gifts would fit them perfectly…

I’ve become such a fan of UGG (even though I don’t own my own pair of UGGs just yet). Their Tasman Cali Wave slipper is perfect for those rainy days with a book in hand. This shoe features the same light, durable outsole as Classic boot, so you can wear it both indoors and outdoors. It’s lined with plush natural wool and it’s crafted from soft suede with an embroidered braid and easy slip-on silhouette. These UGGs are effortlessly paired with boyfriend jeans and a knit sweater.

Nespresso’s divine new festive coffee options are a great add-on to the above. Think Frosted Caramel Nut, Seasonal Delight Spices and Festive Black – a blend from Honduras and Uganda. You can also pair it with the Nespresso Vertuo Pop Liquorice Black or Vertuo Pop Coconut White – a machine perfect for preparing festive coffees.

Books are always a wonderful go-to for gifts. These are some of my suggestions for someone who enjoys slower days. The book on Fynbos Fairies (Fynbos Feetjies) by Antjie Krog and illustrated by Fiona Moodie is available from Babylonstoren’s online shop. Both All the Broken Places (John Boyne) and The Bookbinder of Jericho (Pip Williams) are available at Exclusive Books.

A stunning Fleur Flutter Robe from Duck Apparel will not only make that special someone feel comfortable and calm, but also rather luxurious if you ask me. Apart from its colours epitomising those of summer, this Fleur Flutter Robe is beautifully feminine and you can wear it while getting ready, while lounging on the couch with a cup of coffee, around the pool with a glass of bubbly in hand, or as you’re winding down on a summer evening. Tis classic wrap style robe is comfy, elegant and stylish, all at the same time.

There’s just something about candles over the festive season (alright, and any other time of the year). Especially when it’s candles from Amanda Jayne. Gift someone with summer in a box this Christmas by spoiling them with a scented candle that can transport them. Ultimately, Amanda Jayne’s candles are exactly about that intersection of sense and memory – soy wax candles that are bound to remind that special someone of you every time they smell it. Choose between scents like the Forever Summer range’s Beach Wedding, Velvet Sky, Honeysuckle and Seasoned. Or, opt for one of their best-selling scents: Greenhouse, Night Bloom or Ginger Cake. Visit amandajaynecandles.com for more information.

Spoil someone with a Drift Away Portable White Noise Machine, which will help them drift away into a simple sleep instantly. The machine features seven clean and clear sleep sounds, designed to promote deep, restorative sleep for both babies and adults (so it could even be a great gift for parents to be).

And, gift them with a little something from Sloom too, which will help them drift away to dreamland even more easily. Sloom’s pillows’ premium memory foam chips allow you to personalise your sleep position. With these, sleep is certainly more luxurious.

For those who are taking things slow while simultaneously reflecting and celebrating 2023’s victories, perhaps a bottle of Gold Bar Whiskey is the perfect gift. This award-winning and globally-acclaimed whiskey has just been launched in South Africa and brings the taste of victory to not only discerning whiskey enthusiasts, but also to those who chase success. At the heart of each bottle of Gold Bar Whiskey lies the iconic ‘Lady of Fortune’ coin – a collector-grade treasure that has been hand-pressed onto every individual bottle. This coin symbolises luck and prosperity, which proves that it’s also the ideal bottle of whiskey to open on New Year’s Eve. Here’s to celebrating potential, accomplishment and personal growth while slowly sipping on a glass of award-winning American whiskey. Gold Bar Whiskey is available on Takealot and selected liquor stores nationwide.
