Cape Town’s buzzing Bree Street is turning another page in its fable of food and nightlife fanfare. Fable, one of the Mother City’s favourite cocktail bars, is now more than just a stop for inventive drinks and high-energy evenings. With the arrival of Head Chef Mongezi “MG” Mzoneli, Fable is introducing a new dinner menu in Cape Town – a casual, yet sophisticated food offering that’s already making waves among foodies and fashion-forward diners alike.
From Cocktail Culture to Culinary Destination
Fable has always been known as an “in between” place: the perfect stop between after-work and heading home, or between pre-drinks and a night on the town. Now, the Bree Street hotspot is rewriting its story. With a food and cocktail pairing experience led by Chef MG, Fable is quickly becoming a must-visit Cape Town restaurant for both locals and visitors.
“We wanted to bring something fresh to Bree Street – a menu that, like our cocktails, is playful, flavour-driven and full of personality,” says founder Josh Sarembock. “And I think MG is the perfect chef to bring that vision to life.”

Chef MG has worked in some of South Africa’s top kitchens, including The Greenhouse, and sharpened his skills in Thailand, Luxembourg and France. His cooking style blends global techniques with local inspiration, rooted in creativity and curiosity. The result? Dishes that feel familiar, yet exciting; bold, but approachable – all while respecting flavour.

“I’m cooking the kind of food I love to eat,” he says. “It’s bold, creative and full of heart – fun, familiar and just a little unexpected.”

What’s on the New Fable Dinner Menu?
Guests can look forward to small plates designed for sharing. Think beef kofta flatbreads with Cape Malay sauce, or rooibos-kombucha glazed pork belly with miso custard and chilli-pickled apple. Lighter options include the ‘garden bowl’ with crispy Brussels sprouts and charred corn, and a barley and buckwheat dish layered with mint, basil and Parmesan.
The main courses elevate café-style comfort food with refined techniques, with choices including dry-aged chicken breast with sweet potato fondant and basil–parsley pesto, or sirloin with a classic béarnaise sauce. They also offer plant-based mains, with the king oyster mushroom with black garlic and sweet potato rivaling the indulgence of meatier mains.

For dessert, don’t miss the burnt white chocolate sponge with lime mousse and spiced pineapple – a dish that is as stylish as it is delicious. And, of course, the full cocktail menu at Fable is available to pair with every dish, keeping its reputation as one of the best cocktail bars in Cape Town firmly intact.

When and Where to Enjoy It
Dinner at Fable is served Tuesday to Saturday from 18:30 to 22:30, with the bar and cocktail service running late into the night. It’s the perfect way to start – or end – a stylish night out in Bree Street.
Whether you’re planning a night of Cape Town nightlife, looking for new foodie experiences, or simply searching for a restaurant on Bree Street that offers something fresh and fashionable, Fable’s new chapter is worth booking a table for.
