The newly upgraded Cellar Door at Avontuur Estate – a Helderberg wine estate – has just been launched and since Avontuur was the very first wine estate I visited after moving down to Cape Town in 2010 (yes, I lived there for 6 months), I am extremely excited about this thoughtfully recreated space.
Offering a bright, welcoming atmosphere, the refreshed wine boutique blends modern elegance with a seamless flow from its interiors to the outdoors, ultimately creating a relaxed experience for anyone with a love for the finer things in life. This new tasting room can seat up to 70 guests and it is ideally located for laidback wine discoveries and memorable moments.
The estate‘s Cellar Door overlooks rolling vineyards and Table Mountain in the distance – views that encourage guests to slow down and appreciate their natural surrounds. Outside, leafy vines hang overhead, creating a natural canopy that frames the scene and beyond the patio, the dreamy landscape is accentuated with tall trees, race horses and farmland.

Helderberg Sips at Avontuur Cellar Door
Naturally, in addition to the beautifully upgraded interiors of Cellar Door, guests can also explore Avontuur‘s newly launched wine collections through a variety of signature tastings. This includes:
- The Taberer Family Reserve (R150)
- The Avontuur Collection Tasting (R145 for 3 wines)
- The Thoroughbred Collection (R145 for 4 wines)

Each tasting is guided by Avontuur‘s very knowledgeable team and comes with lots of estate stories, details around the winemaking processes and craftsmanship, as well as a whole lot of personality.
Avontuur is based on the slopes of the Helderberg and produces premium wines that are shaped by this wine region’s exceptional terroir. Of course, the views – stretching across False Bay and Table Mountain – also add to the experience.

Stay at Avontuur
If you’d like to make a weekend of it (I mean, there is a whole trio of signature wine tastings to explore), Avontuur also offers luxurious accommodation at its newly renovated Avontuur Manor House. This winelands stay boasts 9 suites, multiple lounges, a pool, a pavilion and lovely, expansive lawns. Of course, the Manor House (as well as the Barrel Cellar) are also popular venues for weddings, as well as corporate and private events, coordinated by Warren-Stone Weddings & Events.

Experiences Etched in Memory
When I think back to my first real wine tasting experience as a Free State girl trying to find her feet in the Mother City, Avontuur Estate offered me one of the warmest welcomes. They bottled their first vintage in 1987 – my birth year – which simply adds to the nostalgia and since then, they have remained dedicated to producing wines of distinction. Rooted in craftsmanship and with a deep respect for terroir, they produce Chardonnay (which remains their sole white variety), as well as Shiraz, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec. These wines can, of course, all be tasted as part of the three tastings mentioned above and they sit alongside an elegant Cap Classique Brut and a meticulously crafted pot-stilled brandy – adding to the elegance of the estate’s prized race horses that form part of the immaculate views.
