Since Suitcase & Chardonnay’s readership is largely from both Gauteng and the fairest Cape, I’ll be putting together two posts with things to do for Christmas – one for Cape Town and one for Gauteng. While there are numerous hotels, restaurants and other venues offering lovely Christmas lunches and dinners, I wanted to keep to other exciting things like markets, shopping soirees and family fun.

So, without further ado, here are the top things I’d recommend for Christmas celebrations in Cape Town this year. (I know there are many more exciting things and if there is anything you feel is worthy to add to this list, don’t hesitate to comment in the box below).

Chommies Cape Town shopping gathering, 3 December 2022

The Mother City’s favourite lifestyle brand for fogs and their people is celebrating the opening of its new boutique in a heritage building in Gardens by hosting a Christmas shopping gathering on 3 December. Be sure to bring your dog along to have a special Christmas portrait taken next to the 3-meter-tall Christmas tree by the on-site photographer. Pop in anytime between 10:00 and 16:00.

Festive Celebrations with The South African Lipizzaners, 4 – 23 December 2022

Join The South African Lipizzaners for a Christmas Celebration of note on 4, 11, 18, 21, 22 and 23 December. This promises to be a performance of note, kicking off the festive season with carols and musical fun, all to the beat of the famous Dancing White Stallions’ hooves. Christmas Carols with One Life Church, 9 December 2022

The Village Square in Durbanville will be hosting Christmas Carols with One Life Church on 9 December. This promises to be a wonderful event for the whole family and they even have some fun things planned for the kids.

Messy Play and Slime Making, 9 – 18 December 2022

The Messy Hub’s holiday workshops are here, so go ahead and arrange those play dates, moms! Their Messy Play Workshops cost R200 per child (ages 6 months to 7 years) and their Slime Making Workshop costs R300 per child (aged 4 to 10 years). Check their Instagram to see where they’ll be on which dates, as they will be moving around between Greenpoint, Constantia and Rondebosch.

P.S. Joburgers, there is no need to be jealous. They will also be bringing their workshops to the City of Gold, moving around between Dunvegan, Bedfordview, Fourways and Randburg.

Franschhoek Wine Tram’s Festival of Lights

Yes, you read it right. Franschhoek Wine Tram is hosting a Festival of Lights – a first for the Franschhoek Valley and something definitely not to be missed. It will take place on the evenings between 19 and 22 December from 19:30 and it will include festive music, delicious food and drink and an overall Christmas cheer.

Departures via the double-decker tram will start from 20:00 and you’ll hop on at your allocated booking time for a 20-minute journey, specially choreographed with festive lights displayed beside the tracks. Funds raised will be donated to FRANCO and @thekusasaproject, two charities that operate and support children in the Franschhoek area.

Book here.

The Noordhoek Christmas Craft Market, 10 December 2022

Have you ever been to Noordhoek? If not, this is your chance! The Noordhoek Christmas Craft market will take place on 10 December from 09:00 to 20:00. Located at the Noordhoek Sports Fields, it’s an easy find for you and your friends to celebrate the start of the festive season. Funds raised at the event will go towards the various Noordhoek Sporting Clubs to help them continue doing the great community work they do. The market will include craft stalls, food stalls, a beer tent with live music, live demos from various groups throughout the day, as well as some fun sporting games. Of course, Santa will also be there too.

Pop in between 08:00 and 14:00 and celebrate the festive season with friends, family and fur babies. There will also be yoga and Pilates in the park and it will coincide with a dog adoption day.
