Prepare for another remarkable event on the cultural calendar as the highly anticipated ‘Solo Studios – Intimate Art Encounters’ returns to the captivating Riebeek Valley in August. From the 18th to the 20th of August, seventeen artists’ studios will open their doors to the public, offering a rare opportunity to witness their creative processes firsthand. Additionally, seven of these artists have invited external collaborators to co-exhibit in their personal spaces, adding an extra dimension to the experience.
The event goes beyond a mere art exhibition; it promises an immersive journey. Klaus Piprek, co-founder and director of Solo Studios, emphasizes: “At Solo Studios, we don’t just sell art, we sell an experience.” The intimate settings of the artists’ studios provide pass-holders with a unique insight into their inspiration and techniques.
While exploring the artists’ studios, visitors may find themselves enticed by the inviting aromas emanating from a local coffee shop or the captivating scents of essential oils produced in the area. They may even be tempted to indulge in tantalizing wine tastings offered by acclaimed Swartland wine producers. Solo Studios is not confined to visual arts alone; it encompasses the essence of Arts Town Riebeek Valley, which includes the twin towns of Riebeek Kasteel and Riebeek West.
Shawn Hewitt, the project manager for this year’s event, affirms: “The Riebeek Valley will showcase its finest offerings, anticipating the influx of art enthusiasts to this prestigious event.” In addition to the art exhibitions, a plethora of venues will cater to culinary delights and wine tastings. Streets and pavements will come alive with entertainers, and creative community development projects will be showcased through various fringe activities. Visitors can immerse themselves in the rich local flavors of wine and olive producers, abundant restaurants, a village bakery, and an array of craft and artisanal outlets.
To fully appreciate the vast array of offerings, Klaus advises making a weekend of it. “A single day is simply not enough time to absorb all that Solo Studios and the valley have to offer,” he asserts wisely.
The 2023 edition of Solo Studios follows the tremendous success of the previous year, where 183 art pieces were sold, amounting to an impressive value of R2.5 million. The competition to participate in this prestigious event was fierce, and from the numerous deserving applications, seventeen local artists were selected for this year’s showcase.
One of the highlights of the 2023 event is a charity fundraising concert featuring the Winelands Philharmonic Orchestra, accompanied by the renowned Riebeek Kasteel Steelband. This collaboration will feature original compositions, promising a truly memorable experience.
Nestled in the picturesque Riebeek Valley, less than an hour’s drive from Cape Town and cultural hubs like Stellenbosch, Paarl, and Franschhoek, the event’s popularity has led to limited accommodation options in the two small towns. Therefore, patrons are strongly advised to book tickets and accommodation well in advance.
Solo Studios offers a range of passes to suit various preferences, from the Day Pass at R150 to the Premier Weekend Pass at R395 per person. Additional activities may incur a surcharge.
