Giselle: Joburg Ballet Brings Romance to the Pretoria Stage

If you’re looking for an elegant cultural experience to add to your February calendar – especially around Valentine’s Day – the return of Giselle by Joburg Ballet offers a timeless evening of romance, storytelling and artistry.

Launching Joburg Ballet’s 25th anniversary season, this ballet – one of the most romantic ballets of all time – returns to the Joburg Theatre from 12 to 15 February, before touring to the South African State Theatre in Pretoria from 20 to 22 February.

Originally the first ballet performed by the company when it was founded in 2001 (then known as the South African Ballet Theatre), Giselle remains one of the most beloved works in the classical repertoire. It’s a hauntingly beautiful story of love, betrayal, forgiveness and a love so powerful that it reaches beyond the grave – making it especially fitting in the month of love.

This new staging is led by acclaimed South African-born ballerina Angela Malan – now an internationally respected ballet teacher and producer based in Europe. She is joined by Joburg Ballet’s ballet mistress Kim Vieira, along with assistant producers Nicole Ferreira-Dill and Karen Beukes MacDonald, both former principal dancers with the company.

Audiences can look forward to a stellar cast, with principal dancers Tammy Higgins, Ryoko Yagyu and Monike Cristina sharing the title role, alongside Revil Yon, Ivan Domiciano and Bruno Miranda as Albrecht. The production also showcases a strong supporting cast and the ethereal corps de ballet, whose ghostly presence in the second act is one of the most memorable elements of the performance.

Coinciding with Valentine’s Day, performances on 14 February at 14:00 and 19:00 make this an especially romantic outing – whether you’re planning a classic date night or simply looking to immerse yourself in something beautiful.

Giselle will also run at the Joburg Theatre on 12 February at 19:00, 13 February at 19:00 and 15 February at 14:00.

Alternatively, you can watch the romantic ballet in Pretoria at the South African State Theatre on 20 February (schools) at 19:00, 21 February at 19:00 and 22 February at 14:00 and 19:00.
