During the recently hosted Canneseries Festival’s press conference in France, Disney+ unveiled the long-anticipated, six-episode Original drama series, Becoming Karl Lagerfeld (formerly known as “Kaiser Karl”). Produced by Gaumont and Jour Premier, this captivating series will premiere all episodes on 7 June 2024, exclusively on Disney+ internationally and on Hulu in the U.S.
Set in 1972, Becoming Karl Lagerfeld follows the story of Karl Lagerfeld (portrayed by Daniel BrĂĽhl) at the age of 38, before adopting his iconic hairstyle. As a ready-to-wear designer, Lagerfeld is still unknown to the general public. The series delves into Lagerfeld’s romantic relationship with Jacques de Bascher (played by ThĂ©odore Pellerin), a charismatic and ambitious young dandy. This amidst his professional rivalry with Yves Saint Laurent (portrayed by Arnaud Valois), a genius of haute couture, supported by the formidable businessman Pierre BergĂ© (played by Alex Lutz).
Becoming Karl Lagerfeld immerses viewers into the vibrant atmosphere of the 1970s, exploring Paris, Monaco and Rome as Lagerfeld navigates the complexities of his burgeoning career and aspirations to become the Emperor of Fashion. Amidst glamour, clashes of egos, lavish parties and intense passions, the series unveils the untold story of Karl before Lagerfeld.
Adapted from the bestseller, Kaiser Karl by Raphaëlle Bacqué, the series boasts a stellar cast, including Daniel Brühl, Théodore Pellerin, Arnaud Valois and Alex Lutz. Notable figures from the fashion world portrayed in the series include Gabrielle Aghion (played by Agnès Jaoui), Paloma Picasso (portrayed by Jeanne Damas), Loulou de La Falaise (played by Claire Laffut), Marlene Dietrich (portrayed by Sunnyi Melles) and Andy Warhol (played by Paul Spera).
Directed by JĂ©rĂ´me Salle and Audrey Estrougo, with Isaure Pisani-Ferry as the series creator and lead writer, Becoming Karl Lagerfeld promises an enthralling exploration of one of fashion’s most enigmatic personalities.
The series’ music is composed by Evgueni and Sacha Galperine and it is produced by Isabelle Degeorges for Gaumont and Arnaud de CrĂ©miers for Jour Premier. The first two episodes of the series premiered at the Canneseries Festival.
