You might have noticed a trend when it comes to our family’s travel habits: mid-year and end-of-year halfway stops in the quaint little town of Nieu-Bethesda. This time, our Nieu-Bethesda accommodation was called Suster Alice – just next to Paradijs, another self-catering accommodation option in town we’d previously stayed at. Naturally, one can’t help but wonder if the name of the place is linked to the science fiction novel by American writer, Robert Reed called Sister Alice. Either way, the humble abode’s blue painted doors and wooden floors welcomed us in as if we were old friends, and its spacious living rooms and outstretched garden made for a glorious wonderland to explore.

Nieu-Bethesda Accommodation for Special Memories
Nieu-Bethesda is special. It’s raw; real. Visitors to this little town are not only invited but expected to embrace a slower pace and breathe a little deeper; better. Ideally located for those travelling between Gauteng and the Garden Route, it’s become a stopover we rarely miss. In fact, we have left there thinking we should have stayed a little longer too many times.
If you’re looking for a holiday home for friends in the Karoo, or a large group holiday home in South Africa, you’re bound to find various options in this town. In fact, there are many unique stays in Nieu-Bethesda if you are a traveller looking for something different to the norm.

Tip: Remember to fill up your car before arriving and come with cash should you need it, as there are no gas stations or ATMs in town.
Where to Stay in Nieu-Bethesda: Suster Alice
Located on a relatively large piece of land towards the top end of town, where horses come prancing past at midnight – hooves echoing on the dirt road – Suster Alice offers an almost farm-like feel. A blue wooden door with an enormous key is your first point of entry to this humble home – the perfect holiday rental in Nieu-Bethesda.

A small kitchen allows for cozy stove-side card games (or beer pong with beers from the brewery just up the road), while the rest of the house – all boasting the most beautiful wooden floors and vintage doors – invites one to reminisce and relax. From a vintage karaoke machine and various interesting photos and artworks to a collection of books and unique Nieu-Bethesda-themed artifacts, it might just be your next best weekend getaway in Nieu-Bethesda.

Why Suster Alice is One of the Best Holiday Homes in the Karoo
When you’re in search of a family-friendly holiday home in Nieu-Bethesda, you don’t have to look much further than Suster Alice. Apart from the main house’s four spacious bedrooms (sleeping two each) and a selection of outside rooms that accommodate an additional five guests, it lends itself to the perfect Karoo holiday for those keen on slow mornings, al fresco dining underneath the pergola, garden strolls, riverside picnics and late-night board games.

Further to this, Suster Alice is walking distance from local eateries like Zalig for a good pizza or Die Waenhuis for a proper Karoo meal when you don’t feel like cooking. It truly is a charming holiday home in Nieu-Bethesda, with everything you might need – from coffee, tea and rusks to a well-stocked emergency kit and insect repellent. Of course, Die Winkel is always there for necessities like firewood, charcoal, blitz, bread, milk, baby food and essentials and more.

Garden Route Halfway Stop for Families with Small Kids
Okay, it’s not 100% halfway between Joburg and George, but it’s good enough and a welcome finale to a day of driving, especially when you have toddlers in tow. Between four to five hours’ drive from George (depending on how many times you stop), Nieu-Bethesda is a good stopover for those who prefer a shorter first or final road trip day. Stopping over in Bloemfontein or Colesberg will break the trip into three manageable chunks for families fretting the long drive to the Garden Route or back.

THIS COLESBERG STAY COMES HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
Suster Alice is that kind of holiday home where kids need very little entertainment. They soon had their bicycles out, riding in the streets, and the garden offered a plethora of plants, trees, river views and more to explore. Here, a busy mind can calm down and the routine rush of life is instantly transformed into rest. This humble holiday home encourages connection by creating a space for quiet moments and distraction-free conversations.
