Having opened at the beginning of November 2024, Die Kweekhuis is one of the new restaurants in Pretoria worth paying attention to this year. In fact, it’s a must-visit when it comes to the Pretoria food scene, especially if you have kids.

Die Kweekhuis is the perfect spot for casual dining in Pretoria, be it for a family brunch, friends’ meet-up or a casual business lunch. Nestled between local shops and a state-of-the-art kiddies play area, the new Centurion restaurant is bound to be on everyone’s lips, setting the scene for Pretoria food trends in 2025. The interiors have been beautifully designed with warm colours, terracotta pots, olive trees and unique wall installations that make for great conversation starters. And, over weekends, it’s a vibe! From free sugar-coated popcorn for kids to live entertainment on the farmhouse-style wrap-around ‘stoep,’ Die Kweekhuis is where to eat in Pretoria this weekend.

What I like most about this new Pretoria eatery, is that they are as passionate about slow living and slow food as I am (if not more). Their menu is filled with slow food options, including slow cooked meat selections and mouthwatering sourdough pizzas. The breakfast menu boasts a Leftover Oxtail Shakshuka, which also speaks to their sustainability practices and slow food mantra. Of course, their Steak Braai Broodjie should already be a favourite. Further to this, the menu offers numerous pasta options, with the Lamb Pasta (slow roasted overnight lamb ragout with a napolitana sauce, labneh, boerenkaas and fried aubergine) probably being my next go-to.

Die Kweekhuis Menu

Having been to Die Kweekhuis twice now, we’ve tried a few dishes already. Their Margherita Sourdough Pizzas are out of this world, as is the Spinach and Feta Pizza with a dash of basil pesto. Their traditional biltong cured sirloin with hints of maple and coriander is also a must-try. Or, opt for the Kweekhuis Flat Rib – also slow cooked overnight in a rosemary and sage beef stock, finished with a red wine demi glaze. It’s a definite way to impress. We ordered a couple of sides as small plates to share, which worked wonderfully. The Pumpkin Fritters certainly brought about some nostalgia and the Wilted Cream Cheese Spinach was something else! For a unique, yet local treat, the Smashed Oven Roasted Tomatoes were an absolute hit, as was the Mealie Bread. We still need to return for dessert.

While we gleefully indulged in all these local flavours and the warm atmosphere brought about by high ceilings and the relaxed chatter all around, the kids got to run around on real grass and play their hearts out on specially designed swings and jungle gyms.

Die Kweekhuis is the ideal venue for both al fresco and indoor dining with friends and family. To top it all off, there is more than enough space for events too, and they offer creatives the opportunity to paint some pottery while they wait for their food to arrive.
