March 1 - April 1

Spier Light Art 2024
Artwork: Berco Wilsenach

It’s that magical time of year when Spier Wine Farm comes alive with light! Save the dates because Stellenbosch’s beloved event, Spier Light Art, is back for its sixth edition. From 1 March to 1 April, 2024 visitors can immerse themselves in the glow of 21 different light and video artworks scattered across the farm.

Arrive early to savour an outdoor feast of food and wine beneath the summer sky. And, as twilight descends, the enchanting lights will  flicker to life.

Art is deeply ingrained in Spier’s ethos. Not only does it boast one of the largest contemporary art collections in the country, but it also dedicates itself to making art accessible to all. Hence, this annual light art spectacle remains free to enter – a celebration of artists and their creations, offering each visitor a unique encounter with inspiring artworks.

Art is often said to reflect society and this rings true for the works showcased at Spier Light Art 2024. Artists grapple with profound themes and modern challenges – environmental crises, technology’s dominance, racial and colonial legacies, gender identities and the human quest for meaning.

Despite the weighty concepts, artists infuse their creations with lightness, interaction, and introspection. Laughter and sighs abound, prompting contemplation and wonder.

Curators Vaughn Sadie and Jay Pather promise yet another daring, vibrant and captivating art experience at the farm.

They mean the works meld wonder, participation and contemplation with the Light Art exhibition inviting celebration, offering moments of escapism and fantasy. It also nudges one to connect with the world outside.

Prepare to awaken your senses amidst a tapestry of light and colour. Encounter Stevie Thompson’s mesmerizing Mycelium, or ponder the thin line between relaxation and inattention in Alan Alborough’s sculptural ‘ZZZZ.

Be moved by Abri de Swardt’s Flood Light or Naadira Patel and Sarah de Villiers’ Assembling Lines, prompting reflections on humanity’s impact on our planet.

Prepare for your perspectives on gender, race, immigration and labour to be challenged. Explore the boundaries of language alienation and the intrusiveness of corporate advertising.

Wherever your journey takes you, be prepared to be captivated and enlightened by South Africa’s unparalleled art experience. Bring an open mind and comfortable shoes as the art installations sprawl across the farm. Let Spier Light Art 2024 illuminate your life.

The project receives support from the Swiss Arts Council, Pro Helvetia Johannesburg, and Fedex.
