Closet Classics That Will Make For A Fashionable AW25

Closet classics autumn and winter wardrobe essentials

The trees in our garden are signalling a change of season. Naturally, I am contemplating my autumn and winter wardrobe and slowly, but surely readying myself for slow evenings by the fireplace, red wine in hand. If you’ve been following Suitcase & Chardonnay for a while, you’d know that I am in the process of creating a capsule wardrobe for myself, which means I add certain closet classics to my wardrobe every season as my budget allows. So, as I continue on my journey of how to build a timeless autumn wardrobe, here are some autumn winter wardrobe essentials I plan to invest in for AW25:

A basic, white T-shirt and a Tank Top

One of the key fashion pieces for autumn and a true closet classic, is the basic white T-shirt. I pretty much replace mine every year as it is one of those items I wear quite often. In fact, if I can get it in a ‘buy two for the price of one’ deal, that is no doubt what I’ll do.

A tank top is yet another basic you can’t go without. Tap into the simplicity of the 90s with a ribbed tank top and if you want to elevate your look, merely layer it with a blazer or a striped cardigan.

Long-Sleeve Tee and Turtleneck

These timeless winter wardrobe staples are perfect for layering. This year, I might just invest in two or three colours of a classic long-sleeve tee. In addition, I might also look for a turtleneck – probably one of the best investment pieces for winter – to play around with when it comes to stylish layering.

A Khaki Trench Coat – One of the Ultimate Closet Classics

The one thing I really need in my capsule wardrobe for autumn and winter this year, is a khaki trench coat. I always want to grab one when going out for the day, especially this time of the year when the rain catches you off guard, whether you’re in Pretoria, Joburg or Cape Town. Of course, it’s also the start of the rainy season for Capetonians and seeing that I am travelling to the Mother City more often this year, a trench coat is definitely one of those classic outerwear investments. If it comes with a hoodie, even better.

A Tailored Trouser

One of the closet classics I haven’t had in my wardrobe for a long time, is a tailored trouser. I think it’s about time that I invested in a properly tailored black pair of trousers. These make an outfit look elevated, yet effortless and it can go with pretty much anything – from kitten heels to funky sneakers.

All-Purpose Knitwear – The Essential Closet Classics

For those grey winter days, a cashmere crew neck or lightweight polo neck is a must. They can be paired with almost anything – from a pair of jeans to a sequin skirt. Plus, it’s something you can wear all year round, so it’s worth spending a little bit more on these. Keep it classic to ensure that it will stay in style for years to come.

Trouser-like Leggings

One of my biggest pet peeves is when leggings – meant for exercising – are worn for work. There are many alternatives out there – some with zips, others with slits or flares, or even stirrups. This is an autumn and winter wardrobe essential if you ask me and according to Vogue, it’s also the foundation for your favourite white tanks and tees, blazers, trench coats and more.

Back to Basics with a Black Blazer

Speaking of blazers, a black blazer is yet another timeless winter wardrobe staple I haven’t owned in a long time. Don’t ask me why, because there has been many a time that I have missed it while getting dressed. It’s a feminine, yet strong classic and it can be dressed up or down.

Whether you opt for a single-breasted style for everyday wear, or a collarless blazer with a nipped waist and a rounded collar that elegantly shows a bit of clavicle, it’s your choice. The only thing that matters is that you actually have the option of a black blazer you love in your closet.

Nostalgic Sneakers

Adidas’ retro-style sneakers have caught my fancy over the past few months, and with celebrities wearing it everywhere, it’s a sure fashion staple this season.

Fashionable Flats

A pair of fashionable flats is non-negotiable among the list of closet classics this year. With ballet flats back in fashion, you have ample options to play around with and it doesn’t have to be boring. In fact, you can choose a pair of bright red ballet flats to pair with a simplistic outfit. Or, look for ballet flats with interesting details like playful patterns to add that extra touch to your outfit.

A Button-Up Shirt

While I have a white button-up shirt already, I will be investing in one or two more poplin shirts this season, since it’s one of the best layering essentials for your capsule wardrobe. In fact, I might add a blue and white striped button-up shirt and perhaps one in a nude or brown, to fit in with the PANTONE colour of the year: Mocha Mousse.

Of course, these textured shirts will also add a touch of glam to your outfit:

Your Closet Classics Must Include Loafers

I don’t know why I still don’t have these in my closet, but I don’t. Finding the perfect pair of loafers has been a challenge for me, but this season, I will hunt it down! Penny loafers seem to continue into the new season, with fashionistas pairing them with trousers, mini skirts and dresses alike.

Wide White Jeans are the Perfect Closet Classics

A pair of high-rise wide jeans is also on my list for my capsule wardrobe for autumn and winter. It’s the perfect street style closet classic and can be styled with various items for both casual and more elevated looks.

Striped sweater

Stripes are big this season, with a hint of sailor inspiration trickling through. Choose a subtle coloured striped sweater to pair with pretty much any fashion look this autumn.

Kitten Heels Add a Punch to Your Closet Classics

For a no-fuss polish, kitten heels will be my go-to this autumn. These black kitten heels from Superbalist are classic and elegant, perfect for work and play. Or, add some texture and colour to your look with animal print kitten heels from Steve Madden.
