There’s something magical about winter in the Cape Winelands. The air is crisp, the soil rich and the soul naturally seeks warmth – of both the literal and the soulful kind. Ultimately, it is the Season of Comforts and Babylonstoren recently invited me into their Joburg-based hub for a glimpse (and a taste) of their approach to slow food, simple luxuries and cosy rituals that nourish from the inside out.
From the farm, to their impressive depo where all the farm goodness – like their incredible blood oranges – are delivered to Joburg and Pretoria from, to bowls of hearty, handcrafted goodness, Babylonstoren does winter beautifully. While experiencing the farm is first prize, you can now also enjoy a little slice of that Franschhoek farm-to-table magic from the comfort of your own home.

Farm-Style Frozen Meals: Straight from the Winelands to Your Plate
Babylonstoren has launched a brand-new range of farm-fresh frozen meals. Each dish is lovingly crafted by the farm’s chefs, using quality ingredients grown or raised on the farm – or sourced from trusted local producers.

These meals are proper food – nothing rushed, nothing artificial. Just slow-cooked, flavour-packed dishes that you simply heat, plate and serve. I can attest that it truly is convenience without compromise. Each of these dishes feature ingredients with integrity and have been inspired by family recipes. A lot of time and effort have gone into handcrafting these frozen meals on the farm. Not to mention the detail that’s gone into delivering these meals frozen with an unbroken cold chain.
“We prepare each meal in our state-of-the-art facility,” says Tandi Oosthuizen, Babylonstoren’s head of retail. “Whether it leaves the farm or our Johannesburg hub, it arrives at your door frozen to perfection – a taste of the farm, conveniently delivered.”
The Babylonstoren Winter Menu You’ll Want to Bookmark

Each of the dishes in this new Babylonstoren range is a nod to slow living, seasonal dining and the comforting flavours of home. It includes Ilana’s Lamb Tomato Bredie, slow-cooked with locally sourced lamb in a rich tomato base, as well as Oom Roelof’s Chianina Beef Lasagne, which is a decadent twist on the classic, featuring premium beef from Babylonstoren’s own Chianina herd. Not to mention the Caponata Halloumi Bake, with halloumi made from the farm’s own Jersey milk. Other dishes include a vegan Cauliflower & Peach Curry, Chicken Curry, Spinach & Mushroom Phyllo Bake and more.

Pair It With a Babylonstoren Season of Indulgence
Babylonstoren’s Season of Comforts doesn’t stop at the table, though. Think wool and mohair blankets, full-bodied Cape red wines and a bath and body collection that turns every soak into a slow-living ritual.
Wrap up, pour a glass, run a bath and let winter be a season to savour.
