Slow travel in South Africa is more than just another holiday. It’s an invitation to savour every moment, immerse yourself in the country’s breathtaking landscapes and truly connect with local culture. From the wide-open skies of the Karoo to the lush vineyards of the Cape Winelands, South Africa offers endless opportunities to swap rushed itineraries for mindful, meaningful journeys. Whether it’s strolling through fragrant gardens, sipping world-class wines by the fire or wandering through quaint small towns steeped in history, these slow travel destinations in South Africa promise restorative escapes that linger long after you return home.
GweGwe Beach Lodge, Eastern Cape

Accessible by road, boat or plane, this secluded Natural Selection lodge brings with it some of the best slow travel experiences in South Africa. Located in the Mkambati Nature Reserve, it allows travellers to experience both savanna and sea, making for an immersive, luxury slow travel experience like no other. They are committed to managing their natural environment to the best of their ability, which results in spectacular habitats and marine life to explore, while leaving the smallest possible footprint. Here, you get to slow down and see what the Wild Coast must have been like hundreds of years ago, with the Mkambati Nature Reserve still largely untouched.

Paradijs, Nieu-Bethesda, Eastern Cape

Winter in the Karoo is a different kind of slow. Summer too, but in winter, the dirt roads of small towns like Nieu-Bethesda are quiet, the riverbeds are dry and the trees are bare. If you’re keen on small town travel in South Africa, I highly recommend a visit to this quaint little town. You’ll find numerous accommodation options, but Paradijs was a great find, with ample room and a great location for those looking to stay off the beaten path in South Africa.

Cleopatra Mountain Farmhouse, KwaZulu-Natal Midlands

Built up into one of the best South African culinary retreats, Cleopatra Mountain Farmhouse boasts one of the most relaxing getaways in the country. Family-owned and run by chef Richard Poynton and his wife, Mouse, it’s not only a culinary retreat, but also a romantic nature retreat, nestled in the Drakensberg. Whether you’re after a mountain escape or whether you want to indulge in some of the best cuisine the region’s got to offer, you’re in for a real treat here.

Little Fields, KwaZulu-Natal Midlands
Also in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, Little Fields Country House and Cottages is located right at the start of the famous Midlands Meander. This is undeniably one of my favourite slow family stays to date. The owners, Phil and Di Taylor have created a dreamy English country haven where botanical bathroom themes, farmhouse kitchen vibes and stunning gardens allow for special moments all around. Understanding the importance of slow living, Phil and Di have cleverly placed children’s books, a little wooden doll house and more upstairs for kids to play with and in the morning – if you’re lucky – Di will spoil you with freshly baked muffins! Not to mention the impressive veggie patch…

De Zeekoe Guest Farm, Oudtshoorn, Western Cape
Centuries ago, hippos frequented the riverbed here and today, guests can experience this pristine piece of Klein Karoo while staying in a simple, yet elegant stone cottage, encircled with flowers if you visit the right time of year. De Zeekoe Guest Farm allows one to breathe again, while also offering some immersive slow travel experiences like a Meerkat Tour and the Shy Five Experience.
