How to be a savvy traveller

Travelling is one of life’s greatest pleasures, but it’s even better when you do it like a pro. There is much more to being a savvy traveller than you might think. It goes beyond booking flights and packing a suitcase, for sure. In fact, smart travel is about making clever decisions that will enhance your experience and help you get the most out of your journey.

Whether you’re a seasoned globetrotter or planning your first big trip, these ten tips will help you travel smarter, save money and enjoy your adventures to the fullest.

Plan Ahead, But Stay Flexible

It was only this week that I had to change a flight to ensure that I will be back home for my daughter’s ballet exam. Luckily, I had chosen the option of a flexible flight, so it all worked out well. These days, we need to stay flexible. While planning is key to savvy travel, flexibility can save the day.

Be sure to research your destination and booking accommodations (especially for international travel) and create a rough itinerary. However, leave room for spontaneity too. Some of the best travel experiences I’ve had were those that happened at the spur of the moment. Of course, being flexible also helps you to grab those last-minute deals and to avoid high costs during peak seasons. (I admit that leaving things for the last minute is something that I struggle with, but it has come in handy at times).

Travel Light and Pack Smart

One of the golden rules of smart travel is to pack light – another travel challenge I’ve come to conquer over time. Tips to get this right include choosing versatile clothing that can be mixed and matched, and packing only what you really need. This not only saves luggage fees, but it also makes getting around much easier. Oh, also, when you have a suitcase like this one from THULE, it makes packing so much easier too. Remember, you can always do laundry on the go, so there’s no need to overpack.

Use Technology to Your Advantage

Savvy travellers leverage technology to enhance their trips. These days, there is an app for everything. You can use apps for navigation, translation, currency conversion and finding the best local spots. Apps like Google Maps, TripIt and XE Currency are invaluable tools. P.S. Don’t forget to download offline maps and save important documents like tickets and itineraries to your phone for easy access.

Speaking of advantages, also don’t underestimate loyalty programs. Turkish Airlines, for one, has a Miles&Smiles loyalty program, which allows you to earn miles on flights and everyday purchases, as do many of the other airlines. You can then redeem these miles for flight upgrades, free tickets and other rewards. Hence, if you accumulate enough miles, your next flight might just be much more affordable, or even free!

Book Flights and Accommodation Early

To get the best deals, book your flights and accommodation well in advance. Use price comparison websites and apps to find the lowest rates. Also, consider booking flight tickets with the airline or hotel directly to avoid hidden costs. If your dates are flexible, you can often find cheaper options by avoiding peak travel times.

Embrace Public Transport

Instead of relying on taxis, the ideal would be to get to know the local public transport system. It’s often more affordable and certainly provides a more authentic experience. Whether it’s buses, trains or metros, public transport is a great way to explore your destination like a local and see sights you might otherwise miss. When we were in Seychelles, we rented a car for a day and explored Mahe at our own pace, which was also a wonderful experience.

Stay Safe and Healthy

Your health and safety should always be a priority. Before you travel, research any necessary vaccinations, pack a basic first-aid kit and ensure that you have travel insurance that covers medical emergencies. Be aware of local customs and laws and keep a copy of important documents (like your passport) in a safe place.

Learn Basic Phrases in the Local Language

Knowing a few key phrases in the local language of the destination you’re travelling to can go a long way. Look up simple greetings, how to say please and thank you and certain questions. This will undoubtedly enhance your travel experience, while also assisting in connecting with locals. Plus, it shows respect for the culture and it can sometimes lead to insider tips or better service.

Eat Like a Local

One of the best ways to experience a new destination is through its food and honestly, you’re no savvy traveller if you don’t. Dodge tourist traps and instead, find those eateries where the locals hang out. Street food is often delicious, authentic and budget-friendly. Not only will you enjoy local flavours, but you’ll also support local businesses and gain a deeper understanding of the culture.

Be a Responsible Traveller

Savvy travellers are also responsible travellers. Respecting the environment by reducing waste, avoiding single-use plastics and supporting eco-friendly businesses are some of the things that I find very important while travelling, but also as a way of life in general. As you explore, remember to be mindful of your impact on local communities. Shop locally, respect cultural practices and avoid activities that harm animals or the environment.

Stay Connected, But Make Time to Unplug

While it’s important to stay connected for safety and convenience, don’t let your devices consume your trip. Make time to unplug every day and immerse yourself in your surroundings. Whether you’re there to explore a new city, hike a scenic trail or simply to enjoy a moment of silence, being present is key to a richer and more memorable travel experience.

Ultimately, becoming a savvy traveller is all about prep and being flexible and mindful. Now, who’s ready to explore the world like a pro? Remember, the journey is just as important as the destination. Embrace every moment and travel smart!
